Húng Lủi | Spearmint

WHAT IS IT?

Spearmint also known as watermint, is one of the more popular varieties of mint. It is a lighter, bright green color with softer fuzzier pointed leaves.

You can distinguish them from other mints by the roundness of the leaves and darker flowers. Rubbing the spearmint between your fingers, you’ll find that spearmint is not as minty and it smells sweeter than the rest.

WHAT DOES IT TASTE LIKE?

Spearmint is a softer, lighter mint. It’s known for its sweetness and delicate flavor. If you grew up in the 80s you’d remember seeing the advertisements for Wrigley’s Spearmint gum.

Commercially you’ve tasted the artificial version in everything from toothpaste, chewing gum, and shaving creams.

HOW TO SELECT IT?

From left to right: Thai Basil, Vietnamese Coriander, Spearmint, Perilla, and on the bottom Lime Leaves.

Fresh spearmint is best when the stems are firm and the leaves are upright. They should be fragrant, and bright green. If they’re slightly browning or the stems are less than firm, avoid them. Those are signs that they’ll turn fairly quickly.

HOW TO USE IT?

This herb is great for minor ales such as nausea, mosquito bites, and hiccups. It’s a culinary treasure because of it’s delicate balance of sweet and slight mintiness.

Spearmint partners well, allowing other foods to shine while not being overwhelming. It pairs well with ceviche, meats, pestos and teas.

Spearmint can be found in rolls or at the table with a plate of herbs.

WHAT VIETNAMESE OR OTHER RECIPE IS IT MOST COMMONLY USED IN?

Spearmint is easily found with an abundance of herbs tableside with meals. You can find this in everything from fresh spring rolls (Gỏi cuốn), cold noodle bowls (Bún), and a variety of noodle soups.

WHERE TO FIND IT?

The great thing about this herb, you can find it anywhere. Asian and American markets have this, but any Asian market will more than likely be cheaper than the latter.

HOW TO STORE IT?

Spearmint leaves are tender even if the stems are sturdier. Being delicate as to not bruise the leaves is important. Once they bruise the trickle effect of turning is fairly quick.

If you’re lucky enough in purchasing spearmint with longer stems, trim the ends. Wet a paper towel, wring out excess water, and place it in the bag with a bit of air into it. Store in the climate controlled drawers for a longer life.
